Brick Work

Friday August 31

The last day of August brought a flurry of activity on Cheviot Hills Lane.  Insulators, brick layers, and carpenters worked alongside each other throughout the day.

Pink insulation was shot into the walls behind the wall "blanket" that had been stretched along the walls yesterday.  A messy and loud job but they great!

The intrepid brick layers arrived bringing their cheery attitudes and radio.  They started along the south wall.  We love the brick - it's just as great as we'd hoped.
Taken mid-day.....radio sitting on the scaffolding on the right.  :)
This picture taken around 5 showing one completed wall - beautiful!

Insulation

Thursday August 30

When I visited the work site this morning around 10:30, neither the promised insulators or brick masons were on site.  But the carpenters were there cutting and applying siding to the gable over garage number 3.  Trying not to be overcome with disappointment, I chose to be thankful for carpenters....and to pray the others would soon arrive.

Fred and I visited together this evening around 6 and were happily surprised to find large bails of insulation sitting in the garage and lots of insulation already applied!  And the brick layers had erected scaffolding with bricks stacked ready to go in the morning.  Good Good - but then I saw the utility trench had been filled in and bricks were also staged on the north side of our home.  All very good.

Front yard with no trenches - buried utilities are wonderful!

Porches

Tuesday and Wednesday August 28 and 29

Lots of tedious detail outside work is being completed by the carpenters.  This includes the ceiling of the porches and the trim all around the entire house.  The roofers finished - yeah!!!  And it looks fabulous.
Here are the roofers working on Tuesday.... impressive fearlessness.
The roofer's radio balanced in a corner of the roof.  Do you see the moon?

Bricks, Doors, and Trenches

Monday August 27

We had some rain in Vandalia today!  A light rain that wasn't enough to prevent "trenching" to be dug - the water lines (clean coming in, other going out) were covered up and another smaller trench was dug along the north side of the house for the utilities.  Meters were installed for the water lines and the electric.

The bricks and keystones were delivered!  As were the front door, back door, and mechanical room doors. The brick masons will be on site tomorrow as will the carpenters intalling doors and siding on front porch area....should be some major changes made.  The inside is on hold waiting for the insulators.

Under, Over, Around, Across, Through, Behind, and Above

August 24 and 25

The title of prepositions describes the vast amount of wires, pipes, vents, and other gadgets that are behind the walls and above the ceilings of a home.  I am amazed and fascinated with the entire process.  The electrical rough-in was completed on Friday and the City of Vandalia did the inspection.  The fireplace was installed with gas run to it.  The roofers continue their progress across the roof.  On Friday, excavators came and dug an enormous trench from the front of the house out to the street where the main water was tied in.  The tie in was completed....but don't know if it was inspected.

Cans, Wires, Boxes, and Decisions

Wednesday and Thursday August 22 and 23

While the plumbers finished running water lines to the outdoor hose bibs and master shower, the electricians arrived and stole the show.  Their Milwaukee radio blared as wires were strung around and over the rooms (term used loosely).  The plumbers quietly finished installing shut-offs to each and every possible place where water will flow, while electrician installed bright blue boxes here there and everywhere, shiney metal cans in the ceiling, and multi-colored wires running in and out of said boxes and cans.  Seriously though the electricians were very friendly, accommodating, and helpful.

Fred and I made many decisions yesterday evening about where can lights should reside.  I met with Bill early this morning to consult with him to gain his recommendations regarding some "sticky" issues.  As we thought, he was extremely knowledgeable and easily resolved these issues.  The pictures taken this evening show two days of consultation, decision making, and work.

Also noteworthy, the roofers came on Wednesday and laid the first few rows of shingles and did a fabulous job of the corners of the gables.  They came Thursday to continue working on the roof.

Gas Lines and Bath Tubs

Tuesday August 21

The plumbers were back at it today running gas lines to the fireplace, furnace, and outdoor grill.  The hall bath tub was put in place as was the master bath shower base.  I happened to be there this morning when the roof shingles were delivered.  The cab of the truck disengages from the truck bed and becomes a fork lift!  How cool is that.

Hall bath tub!  Gotta love plumbing.
Master bath shower base.

Plumbing

Monday, August 20

Fred and I stopped by the house yesterday evening and were surprised to see the HVAC completed!  The HVAC guys came Saturday to finish up running ductwork and cold air returns.  Today the plumbers were there "roughing" in the sinks, tubs, showers, and air vents.

Kitchen vent.
Master bath tub and shower drains.
Washer and dryer hook ups.
Mechanical room roughed in.

Bricks, insulation, and shingles will be delivered this week.  Roofers and brick masons will be on site working.  I'm told inspections will occur this week as well.  A really BIG week!

Ductwork

Friday August 17

One month ago we closed on our new home and construction started the next morning!  Unbelievable progress has been made in 30 days thanks to great weather, top notch planning, and hard-working skilled professionals.  When I drove by this morning, there were many trucks out front and lots of guys moving around the property.  I even saw Lamont (brick mason) - probably checking to see the progress for himself.

Fred and I stopped by this evening and took some pictures.  The fireplace has been framed in, ductwork was run, vents were put in their ceiling homes, framing for the facia was completed, and the pocket door metal frames were installed.
Fred in the kitchen overlooking the greatroom.  See the ductwork in the ceiling and hanging from the ceiling?
The fireplace frame was made in the corner of the greatroom.

Black Roof

Thursday, August 16

The roof is completely covered with black paper.  The carpenters worked all day on details around the porch and patio and finished covering up the roof.

View from the street.  Tomorrow will mark one full month since we closed - amazing amount of work has been completed since that day.
